Mutiny In The Kitchen With Knives (2008)

This is the 2nd album by Russian Spy Camera, which was released on March 3rd, 2008 to no label. It was initially released as a free download since the money that was originally saved for printing the record was instead used by Ryan to buy a plane ticket to Istanbul, Turkey. Kind of a long story. Mutiny In The Kitchen With Knives, however, is part 2 of 2 parts; the 1st part being its predecessor You Are A Vulutre.

Where You Are A Vulture is about time and deception, Mutiny is about envy. The title Mutiny In The Kitchen With Knives refers to a depressed state where you are unable to think straight because you are too focused on your current feelings. It's as if there's a mutiny in the brain and absolutely no order or logic there to steer it in a clear direction. The "envy" is perceivably the root of that depression and frustration.

Interestingly, Mutiny isn't really a depressing album. Like Vulture, it's sort of an eclectic collage of feelings touching on concepts of beauty in the media (Bring Down The Mannequins), voyeurism (Hotels), and customer service (Pixels In Your Soup). As with many of Russian Spy Camera songs, The Twilight Zone television show from the early 1960's is also a huge inspiration to several of the songs: Clouds In A Black Sky, Cryptology, The Obsolete Man, Bring Down The Mannequins. Many of the themes and topics brought to light in the original show were not only revolutionary for its time but are also still current today. The show itself is a favorite of Ryan's and was often watched during the writing of the album.

In the crowd he was there. In a cape he was there.
And his eyes were lit just like a car crash rash of minutemen.
In the church he was there. In the news he was there.
The revelation hits you like a ton of bricks.
Now he's getting away! He's getting away! And there's a million different people in the world who'd agree that there is nothing to see when you finally reach the end and everything is complete. But you can go down south to the coast of France on a chase to catch the devil with the blood on his hands. All honest men make unconvincing liars. You hear him howling and he's howling and he's howling and he's howling...
In the math he was there. In the sex he was there.
The revelation hits you like a ton of bricks.

This job has numbers in its days, algorithm people sending order to the graves.
    You say you want it good, you have it bad;
you want it in a time machine so you can have it back when it's not like that.
This here is a secret red phone hidden in a bust of Marcus Cicero
where I will give you orders to not speak jealous clarion calls.
Where I will give you orders...
Waiter! Waiter! There are pixels in my soup!
I can't eat this. Um, you better take it back.
Why set a fire to a quiet dining room when you can drop (your) complaints into the pins of my voodoo doll?
It's just an easier way. It's more convenient this way. We're moving muscles.
They're biting and breathing. They want it right and they want it right now.
This job has numbers in its days, algorithm people speaking digits from their graves.
Trap floors that lead to alligator mouths. This is urgent and I'm irate.
Eureka! I've got it! We'll dig a tunnel and get ourselves out! We'll live better lives.
    You said you want it good, you want it bad;
you want it in a time machine so you can have it back.
I am a very dangerous customer with almighty needs and yellow gnashing teeth (if you ask for them).
I want to feed you to the wolves.

Lying on your thoughts kindly state your preference please.
Speak brutality to a language that regales.
Altruistic codes in the Daily Chronicle
Motives questionable and there in hangs the tale.
It's all just in your head. The answer's in your head. It's all just in their m-o-u-t-h.
    I hear the warning at the gate, she knows their secrets;
The feeling is a punch of irony to the gut.
    I hear the warning at the gate, she knows their secrets;
You taste delicious like an ingredient in one's soup.
    "T-o-s-e-r-v-e-m-a-n," it says;
    Anything you want absolutely free.
But kindness has a price just like everybody knows
When led by our nose from adapting with great ease.
It's all just in your head. It's all just in your h-e-l-l.
    I hear the warning at the gate, she knows their secrets;
The feeling is a punch of irony to the gut.
    I hear the warning at the gate, she knows their secrets;
We've gone from Ruler to an ingredient in one's soup.

You will miss me when I'm gone. You will miss me when I'm gone away from this place.
An infomercial about "the future" tells me I'm of no use in your life anymore with glasses, awkward jokes, and a head that's full of curls and chaos.
You will miss me when I'm gone.

We check in you tied the knot now you're tied to the bed.
In the glow your eyes are static to a tv set.
You get off on the 13th floor you're lost in a dream.
In my Hotels my paintings watch you when you are asleep.
In hotels we will meet by the elevator.
In hotels you are a tired businessman in a tie...
In hotels I am a stewardess alone and away...
In hotels you stand composed but your thoughts can't behave.
    You watch me...
    leave.
Tonight I spread you open like a new set of sheets.
Tonight I spread you open like a new set of sheets.
...you get the lonely feeling that you've been here before.

Here at the end of the world, I will dance as a ghost
in the revealing sunbeams across your bedpost.
"I will set this path so narrow and straight."
And then suddenly something jumps out and devours you whole.
I think someone is following us down this alleyway Ha Ha Ha
And I don't recognize his shadow from anywhere.
G-u-i-l-t-y! Put him in the noose! Put him in the noose!
"He does good deeds but he hasn't got a soul, man."
And then suddenly something jumps out and devours you whole.
    (I ain't no Antonio Salieri)
Mary, you're bleeding and there's nowhere to rest your soul.
Mary, you're bleeding and there's nowhere to rest your soul.
I want to put my thirsty lips down to your flowing river banks
and take a drink of eternal life because this town has placed a curse on me.
And then suddenly something jumps out and devours you whole.

At night I move with mannequins in perfect gentle ease.
Statues mistaken us for mobile deities.
People wish they wore the hips frozen in a sway
leaning on the empty heels of a hope they saw in a window display.
Flip back Jack this here's a surprise attack: what's yours will be mine.
You cause black banshee wailings to play checkers in my spine.
This one wants to be adored and this one wants some praise.
This one just wants survival from the birds that are circling above their prey.
I hid your gun under your pillow just in case you go off before I do.
Meanwhile, back at home, there's a warm fire waiting for you
On angry torches outside a bomb shelter made for two.
My skin bleeds replica in fancy fashion lines.
You'll find your mannequins on the magazines in a grocery store check-out line.
I hid your gun under your pillow. These graves are bows set in your hair.
Like ants in the TV static, like bats rattling around in the attic,
You can't predict our foolish nature to i-m-i-t-a-t-e.
I know these words I speak don't mean anything to you.
My tongue speaks bullets but your ears are bulletproof.
You inject makeup in your heart and you put plastic in your head.
Why keep your insipid form when there's a really pretty face waiting here for you instead?

Who built this scaffolding around your head when there are earthquakes underfoot?
Like little lemmings everyone of you are, so quick to rush the sea.
So quick to rush the sea.
You put me on edge like a headache in a hectic robbery.
You make a scandal so simple. A pattern. A murder.
Reach in this chest and massage this heart that breeds bleeding stabs in the dark.
Feelings fleeing off in a chariot. The witches locked the kids in the cupboard.
You make a secret sound sacred with panic. It's madness.
But I know who you've come for and why you're here..
    And I think it's hilarious.

Bleeding in the icebox, bleeding at the gums.
You have not been listening, you have all been wrong.
You might hear me coming but you can't detect my steps.
"Caution! Caution!" spelled out in the panic in your breath.
Bleeding in the icebox, bursting at the seams.
I can read the hieroglyph but don't know what it means.
Climbing out the window slyly slipping out the back.
I cut off all their fingers but then still they pull me back.
No no, there's no worry. You'll be safe and home in no time. I promise.
Thank you for holding my trembling hand.
Bleeding in the icebox, bleeding at the gums.
You have not been listening, you have all been wrong.
If you were a voodoo doll they'd pin you just the same.
This box has a ticking and I think it has your name on it..
No no don't worry. You'll be home and safe in no time.
You should know there is no chance of escape.
Lock them in the cellar, feed them only flies.
A picture is a thousand words but half of them are lies.
Lick your fingers madly leave me spellbound without say.
The future's never on time and I don't have time to wait.
No no, there's no worry. You'll be safe and home in no time. I promise.
Thank you for holding my trembling hand.

Learn to spot the easy ones, they're pros, and they're cons.
    Ruptured leaking nest eggs
Over the last moments of a dying sun nestled in the trees.
No one is safe from stupidity.
Hold your tongue before it speaks for you
    Under the control of phantoms.
Both hands raised up to the sky.
Bible's in the eye of the beholder.
All is well. All is well.
    Reason, my love, is

The feeling of trucks on your chest is a heartbeat.
You are an encrypted note wrapped and safe in a bird's beak.
"Neat but not gaudy," says the Devil as he paints his tail green.
I am the safety between these knees you've hated all your life.
And in a girl's dream everything seems safe and right.
"Neat but not gaudy," says the Devil.
